The Canadian Nurse Psychotherapist Association (CNPA) is observing a significant increase in inquiries from insurance companies and third-party benefit providers. These organizations are now regularly contacting the Association to verify if a RN Psychotherapist or Certified Nurse Psychotherapist (CNP) is a member in good standing with the member respective College of Nurses and CNPA before approving client claims for reimbursement.
To maintain the integrity of our professional designation and ensure public safety, we are implementing the following policy update regarding membership status:
1. Insurance Verification
We will continue to provide timely verification to insurance providers. Members are reminded that "Good Standing" requires:
An active, fully paid membership.
Compliance with all CNPA continuing education and clinical supervision requirements.
No active disciplinary restrictions.
2. Mandatory Notification to the member College of Nurses
Please be advised that if a RN Psychotherapist or Certified Nurse Psychotherapist’s membership with the CNPA is revoked for any reason—including but not limited to professional misconduct, incompetence, or ethical breaches—the CNPA will immediately notify the member College of Nurses .
This notification will include:
The fact that the membership was revoked.
A detailed explanation of the reasons and evidence behind the revocation.
3. Professional Accountability
As regulated health professionals, nurses are accountable to their respective College of Nurses. The CNPA has a professional and ethical obligation to ensure that the regulatory body is informed when a member no longer meets the standards required to practice psychotherapy safely under our association’s banner.
4 Notification to the insurance company if the membership was revoke
If the certified nurse psychotherapist qualifying CNP(Q) or Certified Nurse Psychotherapist CNP registration number was used on an payment invoice, the insurance provider will be notified that their membership has been revoked.
Why is this happening?
Provider Transparency: Insurance companies are tightening their fraud prevention and quality assurance measures.
Public Protection: Linking association standing with the member, provincial regulator ensures that any practice concerns are handled by the body authorized to grant the license to practice nursing.
